The flow of particulate solids is the focus of years of study at Huber. Technologists have studied the impact of preferential absorption and the application of food-grade silica and silicates for decades.

Moisture, pressure, and temperature all adversely affect powdered and granulated products.  These conditions can make your products cake, lump, bridge, clog your equipment and give you packaging and performance problems.   The finely engineered line of carrier, free-flow and anti-caking agents from Huber Engineered Materials can improve the flow behavior and storage stability of your products.

Efficient Liquid Absorption (Carriers)
Huber Engineered Materials carrier products absorb substantial amounts of liquids, yet they remain free-flowing with powder-like characteristics.  The ease of handling highly viscous or highly reactive products is extraordinarily simplified by using carrier products.  Carrier products work by first absorbing the liquid onto the carrier.  Then, when the product is put into an aqueous system, the “carried” liquid is released and ready to be activated.

Huber Engineered Materials Services…
Information and testing Huber Engineered Materials can provide you with includes:

·        Pressure Caking…

a measure of the tendency of a material to cake when subject to pressure

·        Moisture Caking…

a measure of the tendency of a material to cake when subject to water

·        Angle of Repose…

a.k.a. the “height of the hill” – a measure of how well a product flows

·        Flowdex…

a measure of flowability of a product in baghouse/silo conditions

·        Aeroflow…

a measure flowability of a product in rotating drum conditions (“time between avalanches”)

·        Loose Bulk Density…

a density measure to understand the impact of the free-flow agent

·        Rheology…

a measure of thixotropy and dilatency

·        Texture Analysis…

a measure of stringiness, slip, and surface tension

·        Carrying Capacity…

a measure of the amount of liquid product that can be absorbed onto the surface of a carrier particle

·        Particle Size Analysis…

a measure of particle size in order to best to match with free-flow agent

Powdered Egg Products
Because of the high fat content of powdered egg products, they are very difficult to handle in continuous mixing and proportioning equipment. High fat content accentuates caking and lack of flowability of these fine particle products.  Two percent ZEOLEX® silicate absorbs the fat and coats the surface of the dried egg products, thus acting as a parting agent to prevent caking and improve drying, handling and packaging.

High Fat Mixes
Cake and other mixes handled either in bulk by automatic machinery or used by the homemaker must be free flowing.   Powdered shortening and other fats and proteins impair the handling ability of the powdered mixes.  ZEOLEX® silicate or ZEOFREE® silica absorbs and carries the oils and fats there by promoting free flow.

Spices and Seasonings
Very fine particles of Huber conditioners coat the surface of the ingredients providing a parting action which improves and maintains the flowability of the mix.  High oil absorption enables the conditioner to preferentially absorb oil, which may exude from such components as paprika, garlic, or onion powders.  In addition, the hygroscopic nature of Huber synthetic silicas and silicates provide a degree of moisture protection to the dry mix.
