Industrial and Paper Coatings
- Untreated fine particle size ATH→SpaceRite® and Micral® grades
Spacing Titanium Dioxide (TiO2)
Fine particle size Alumina Trihydrate (ATH) is used in architectural, industrial and paper coatings to space titanium dioxide (TiO2). Although ATH by itself does not impart opacity to a coating, its small particle size can put some distance between TiO2 particles, making the TiO2 more efficient, while also imparting fire retardance to the coating.
- SpaceRite® S-3 is a 1 micron precipitated ATH which offers extremely high brightness, low surface area and compatibility with all coatings systems. Compared with other TiO2 extenders which are naturally occurring, SpaceRite S-3 allows the formulator flexibility to maintain high gloss and pure white color.
- Micral® 1500 is a 1.5 micron ATH which is an economical fine particle size extender with a broader particle size distribution compared with SpaceRite S-3.is less expensive than TiO2. Although ATH by itself does not impart opacity to a coating, its small particle size can put some distance between TiO2 particles, making the TiO2 more efficient.
Flatting
ATH is used in some applications to reduce the gloss of various powder coatings. The grades used most commonly are:
- Micral® 932, a 2 micron ground ATH and Micral® 632, a 3.5 ground ATH grade.
Elastomeric Roof Coatings
SB 432 is a 9 micron ATH commonly used to impart fire retardance to elastomeric roof coatings.
