Huber Launches ReCal™ Platinum Calcium Carbonate for Post-Consumer Content Applications

ATLANTA, April 15, 2014 – Huber Engineered Materials, a division of J.M. Huber Corporation, is launching ReCal™ Platinum Calcium Carbonate for use as a component in building materials to generate various green building credits and in other demanding applications where certified post-consumer content is required.

ReCal Platinum is 50 percent by weight post-consumer content (third-party verified) with the remaining 50 percent post-industrial content (third-party verification pending) produced by a proprietary re-milling process (patent pending).  It is a light gray color milled to a consistent median particle size and topcut.  Two ReCal Platinum calcium carbonate products are offered, ReCal™ Platinum 8 and ReCal™ Platinum 20, which are milled to an 8- or 20-micron median particle size, respectively.

Post-consumer application possibilities are numerous.  They include building materials used for various green building credits, which include the LEED® Program, National Green Building Standard™ Rating System and NSF/ANSI 140 and 332.

“ReCal Platinum is a win-win for Huber and the customer, as we both want to be at the forefront of environmental stewardship and sustainability,” says Lane Shaw, Technology and Business Development Director of Huber’s Ground Calcium Carbonate business.  “Many of our customers are looking to achieve LEED credits and green-related certifications, and we’re able to successfully recycle calcium carbonate to offer a post-consumer product.”

A recent pilot program conducted between a paint operation and carpet company has proven that the ReCal Platinum grades can be used successfully to create new consumer products.  Calcium carbonate was recovered from the painting operation and taken to Huber’s Quincy, Illinois, calcium carbonate operation for re-milling, then sent to the carpet company for recycled carpet backing applications.

“We’re excited and pleased with the results we’ve seen from ReCal™ Platinum thus far, as we are just scratching the surface of what we think this product can achieve from both a performance and applications standpoint,” says Shaw.  “We’ve got the finest grind post-consumer calcium carbonate on the market with ReCal Platinum, which no other company has, so there’s a lot of potential on the horizon.”
