Environmental Stewardship

Only when our actions are in accord with our Principles, can we maintain the high standards we have set for ourselves as a Company.

Environmental Stewardship

Huber Engineered Materials (HEM) is committed to employing responsible business practices that contribute to the sustainable development of the natural and human resources in the communities where we operate.

Whether it's a new way of thinking to save energy at a Huber manufacturing operation, employing a new method to curb the waste of water, or using property and land to enrich the lives within the communities we operate, Huber Engineered Materials (HEM) is constantly looking at ways to sustain the precious environment in which we live and the many resources we enjoy for present and future generations. Let us share a few examples of our worldwide sustainability efforts:

Facility Built for Safety and Sustainability

Quincy, Illinois
(Health & Nutrition - Granulated Calcium Carbonate Manufacturing)
The design of Huber’s granulated calcium carbonate facility in Quincy, Illinois, is built around employee safety and sustainability. The plant is equipped with non-slip flooring, abundant lighting and strategic placement of equipment for safety purposes and to minimize noise. White-paneled walls are easily washed and elimination of accumulated dust and dirt is easy. Epoxy-coated floors results in easily-cleaned surfaces. The integration of granulation with the ground calcium carbonate manufacturing facility eliminates the use of 630 tons of packaging materials that otherwise would have to be land-filled annually. Also, transportation for granulation to Huber’s Modesto, California operation is avoided, eliminating over four million pounds of CO2 emissions each year, which is equivalent to the carbon removed from the atmosphere by 48.5 million tree seedlings grown over a ten-year period.

Conserving Water

Bauxite, Arkansas
(Fire Retardant Additives Manufacturing)
Huber's fire retardant additives manufacturing facility in Bauxite, Arkansas is working diligently to conserve one of our most precious resources, water.  One of the greatest challenges we face in the world today is growing pressure on water resources from population growth, climate change and pollution.  A new cooling tower at Bauxite controls the flow and recirculates it, eliminating the continual need to use and discharge city water.  The result?  The Bauxite facility expects to reduce water use by around 144,000,000 gallons (545,000,000 liters) per year.
